This can lead to a significant decrease in cooling power, which in the worst case leads to the inability to drive the ship. Usually installed systems to prevent this fouling, like electrically powered copper anodes or the use of chemicals, require high maintenance costs and often do not often lead to the desired results. The consequence accruing is that box coolers and sea chests must be thoroughly cleaned mechanically.This is very time consuming and costly especially in regards to the box cooler. Furthermore, the scrubbing in many countries is prohibited.
